Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Lanier Graham DeLaHunt

scan0052Claxton/Pembroke-  Helen Lanier Graham DeLaHunt, age 97 died Monday Dec. 5, 2011 at her home in Claxton.  She lived most of her life in Pembroke.  Mrs. DeLaHunt was employed with the Pembroke Post Office in the late 1940’s and retired as Postmaster in 1975.  She was a member of Pembroke United Methodist Church for most of her adult life, was the youth leader for many years and was the teacher of the Helen DeLaHunt Sunday School Class.  Mrs. DeLaHunt was preceded in death by her husband, Remes DeLaHunt; son Lanny Graham; parents I.G. and Alda Lanier; sisters, Ivelyn Gregory and Mary Will Shearouse.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bettie and Jimmy Sands of Claxton; granddaughters, Melissa (Bond) McLendon of Claxton, Saralyn (Derrell) McNeil of Spartanburg, SC; five great grandchildren, Helen, Vivian and Jesse McLendon, Ave and Daniel McNeil; nephew, Steve (Hope) Shearouse of Springfield, Georgia and Tepachula, Mexico and niece, Lyn Hendren of Eatonton, GA and special “daughter” and caregiver, Faye Williams of Claxton.

Visitation will be 5-8 P.M. Wednesday Dec. 7 at the funeral home.  Funeral Service will be 11 A.M. Thursday Dec. 8 at Pembroke United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Northside Cemetery in Pembroke.  Remembrances may be made to Pembroke United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 479, Pembroke, GA 31321, Claxton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 546, Claxton, GA 30417 or Mission On The Move, P.O. Box 206, Springfield, GA 31329.  Pallbearers will be Billy Miles, Harry Owens, Gene Sanders, Steve Shearouse, Bond McLendon, and Darrell McNeil.  Honorary pallbearers will be the Helen DeLaHunt Sunday School Class.  “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones”. Mrs. Judy Boutwell Sikes

scan0088Ellabell-  Judy Boutwell Sikes, age 55 died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011 at Hospice Savannah.  Mrs. Sikes was a life-long resident of Bryan County and formerly work in the lunchroom at Bryan County High School, later taught at Lifespring Christian Academy, and was a member of Lifespring Worship Center.  She enjoyed both watching and playing softball, enjoyed writing, was an avid gardener and loved her church and her family.  Mrs. Sikes was preceded in death by her parents Willie Edward and Emma Roberts Boutwell.

Survivors include her husband of 39 years Jerry Lee Sikes of Ellabell; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Lee and Jessica Sikes and Jacob Anthony Sikes all of Chatham County; two daughters and son-in-laws, Patty and Jamie Rewis of Effingham County and Pamela and Jack Williford of Guyton; two brothers Allen and Billy Boutwell, both of Ellabell; two sisters Jackie DeLoach of Bryan County and Sandra B. Purvis of Groveland; 9 grandchildren and expecting another.

Visitation will be 5-9 P.M. Tuesday, Dec. 6 at the funeral home.  Funeral service will be 2 P.M. Wed, Dec. 7 at Lifespring Worship Center with Dr. Julie Mack and Pastor Toby Skrine officiating.  Burial will follow in Northside Cemetery.  Flanders Morrison Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Virona Butler Tucker

scanPembroke-  Mrs. Virona Butler Tucker, age 86 died Saturday morning while under the care of Evercare Hospice and her family.   Mrs. Tucker was a homemaker and a member of Beulah Baptist Church.  She enjoyed sewing, tending her yard and flowers and keeping up with the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.   Mrs. Tucker was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Mr. Thomas E. Tucker.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law Gail and Lloyd Gibbs of Gordon, GA; two sons and daughter-in-laws Jerry and Delores Tucker of Pembroke and Burton and Sally Tucker of Richmond Hill; three brothers Herman, Jesse and Billy Butler; nine grandchildren Pamela Gibbs Leslie, and Jesse “Bubba” Gibbs;  Tondra Barnes; Jerry E., Clayton, Blair, Derek, Heath and Alex Tucker; and 10 great grandchildren Meghan and Trey Carter; Joseph, McKenzie and Dawson Barnes; Emily, Josh and Taylor Tucker; and Lloyd Gibbs II and Logan Gibbs.

Mrs. Terry Hughes Vangiller

scan0288Pembroke-  Mrs. Terry Hughes Vangiller, age 55 died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011 at her home while under the care of Hospice Savannah and her family.  Mrs. Vangiller was a life-long resident of Pembroke and was a teacher at Bryan County Head Start.  She obtained her Master’s degree in both Special Education from Armstrong Atlantic State University and Psychology from Argosy University.  Mrs. Vangiller enjoyed crochet, fishing, horses, reading and refinishing antique furniture.  She was predeceased by her parents Jasper and Winnie Fanning Hughes and her granddaughter Laura Camille Cobb.

Survivors include her husband of 38 years Roy Vangiller of Pembroke; one son Jack Vangiller; three daughters Crystle Vangiller, Rhonda Young, and Rachel Smith; six brothers Robert Hughes, Glenn Hughes, David Hughes, Russell Hughes, Pat Hughes, and Jesse Hughes;  three sisters Valerie Hughes, Pam Drazich and Peggy Tate; seven grandchildren Tyson Young, Damien Vangiller-Goggins, Maria White, Alisha White, Jessie Vangiller, Levi Vangiller and O’Shamis Vangiller; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 6-9 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.  Funeral services will be 2 P.M. Mr. H. David Newman

scan0281Blitchton-Mr. H. David Newman, age 65 died Sat. Nov.19, 2011 at St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah.  Mr. Newman was retired from APAC and was a volunteer fireman at the Blitchton Fire Department where he was the first to be certified on the Jaws of Life.  He was a member of Eldora Baptist Church and had coached both daughters’ recreational softball teams at Hendrix Park.  The great interest in his life was his grand kids.  He was predeceased by his parents Joseph Carson and Pauline Crosby Newman.

He was survived by a son Kevin and Jill Newman of Savannah, two daughters and son-in-law, Kelly Newman and Crystal and Darrell Mohn all of Augusta; two sisters, Janette and Bob Landers and Shirley and Jimmy Jarrell all of Ellabell; six grandchildren, Ashlyn, Kaitlyn, Connor, and Bethany Mohn and Nicholas and Hannah Newman.

Visitation will be 5-8 P.M. Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at the funeral home.  Funeral service will be 2 P.M. Wednesday, November 23, 2011 in the chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Mr. Heulett Wright Lanier

Pembroke-Mr. Heulett Wright Lanier, age 78 died Friday, November 18, 2011 at MCG Health System in Augusta, GA. while surrounded by his loving family.  Mr. Lanier was a member of Upper Black Creek Primitive Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.  He was a lifelong resident of Pembroke, a Mason, and an Iron Worker with Local # 709 for over 40 years.  He was proud of his gun collection, loved to fish, loved his family; but the real love of his life was His Church where he was a faithful servant.  He is predeceased by his parents, Adcus and Prudie Kangeter Lanier and a sister Patty Byrd.

He is survived by a niece Darlene and Rick Shuman of Pembroke, a nephew James L. (Pete) and Pat Byrd of Groveland; three great-nieces Monique and Trey Miller of Statesboro, Ciara and Randy Sims of Pembroke, and Laura Byrd of Groveland; and a great-nephew Lanny Byrd of Groveland and other family members.

Visitation will be 5-7 P.M. Monday, Nov. 21, 2011 at the funeral home.  Funeral service will be 11 A.M. Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011 at Upper Black Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Bro. Mr. Norwood Sims

scan0191Savannah-Mr. Norwood Sims, 77 passed away peacefully, Monday November 14, 2011 at his home while surrounded by his family.  Mr. Sims was retired from Union Camp Corporation as a machinist after 32 years.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved shrimping, gardening and the outdoors. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years Christine Tomlinson Sims; parents Lonnie and Verta Shuman Sims; 11 brothers and sisters; and two nephews.

He is survived by two sons and daughter-in-laws, Larry and Ellen Sims, and  Steve and Linda Sims all of Savannah; one daughter Tina Sims Yeomans of Savannah; two brothers Vernon and Dewey Sims  and one sister Pat Sims Akins all of Black Creek; six grandchildren Stacy Daniel, Keith Daniel, Joey Sims, Alexa Sims, Lydia Sims,  and Christina Youmans; and two great grandchildren Sarah and Evan Daniel.

Visitation will be 5-8 P.M. Tuesday Nov. 15, 2011 at the funeral home.  Funeral service will be 11 A.M. Wed. Nov.16, 2011 in the chapel of Flanders Morrison Funeral Home with Rev. Dan Bryant and Rev. Mrs. Mary Catherine Brown

scan0116Savannah-Mrs. Mary Catherine Bacon Brown 90, died Sunday, November 13, 2011 at Candler General Hospital in Savannah, GA. Mrs. Brown was the Executive Secretary to the Mill Director at Union Camp Corporation before her retirement after 42 years of service.  She was a member of First Baptist Church of Pembroke where she was a member of the Lingerfelt Circle.  She loved to crochet, cook, and especially loved her family.  Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Robert Edward Brown, Jr. and her parents Albert S., Sr. and Erie Bertie Lanier Bacon.

She is survived by two daughters and son-in-laws Brenda Kay and Jim Kobleur of Savannah, and Betsy B. and Jack Wall of McRae; one brother Thomas Hoynes Bacon of Pembroke, one sister-in-law Martha Bacon of Statesboro; six grand children, and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6-9 P.M. Wednesday November 16, 2011 at the funeral home.  Funeral service will be 11 A.M. Thursday November 17, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Pembroke with Dr. Brad Butler and Elder Kurt C. Mr. Frank Donald Smith, Jr.

scan0068Woodstock-  Mr. Frank Donald Smith, Jr. died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011 after a long battle with cancer.  Mr. Smith worked most of his life in construction and was retired from Federal Express.  He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed NASCAR.  Mr. Smith enjoyed both watching and photographing sunsets.  He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church and was loved by everyone who knew him.  Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Mae Smith and brother Benjamin Smith of Pembroke.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janice Lanier Smith of Woodstock; son and daughter-in-law Brian and Lorri Smith of Acworth; three grandchildren Tyler Smith of Woodstock, Jackson and Shelby Smith of Acworth; two sisters and a brother-in-law Martha Lanier of Goldsboro, N.C. and Brenda and Mickey Talley of Fackler, AL; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Mr. Delmus Kenneth Hursey

scan0029Ellabell-  Mr. Delmus Kenneth Hursey, age 84 died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011 while under the care of his family and Hospice Savannah.  Mr. Hursey was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during WWII and the occupation of Japan.  He retired from Union Camp with over 43 years of service and was a member of Ellabell Methodist Church.  Mr. Hursey enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening and his family.  He was a great husband and father.  He provided for many people in this community from his garden and would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need.  His Christian values will live on in his family.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Shirley Ann Hursey of Ellabell; son Brian Kenneth Hursey of Ellabell; four daughters Paula H. (Rodger) Lower of Kingsland; Robin C. Hursey  (Wallace Chavis) of Ellabell, Lisa M Hursey of Ellabell and Shannon L. Craft of Ellabell; one sister Winona Blitch of Stilson; and five grandchildren Brooke N. Lower, Caitlyn A. Lower, Jonathan D. Craft, Diana M. Moon and Abigail M. Summers.
